Three Trios  -  Sun Oct 01, 2017  |  07:00 pm
For the final event of the Newcastle Festival of Jazz & Improvised Music, Jazz North East pulls together a staggering line-up of brilliant musicians, mixing and matching them in three riveting trios.

Violinist Alison Blunt, saxophonists Julie Kjaer & Rachel Musson, and cellist Ivor Kallin all play regularly with the London Improvisers Orchestra as well as a host of smaller groupings; Hannah Marshall - also a cellist - is in constant demand, and has made previous Tyneside appearances with artists of the calibre of Alexander Hawkins and Ingrid Laubrock; trumpeter Laura Jurd Laura continues to make waves, most notably with her astounding group Dinosaur; and electronics maestro 'Leafcutter' John burst on the jazz scene with the groundbreaking Polar Bear and regularly performs with his own hand built synthesisers.
Trio 1 : Julie Kjaer + Hannah Marshall + Rachel Musson … touching on a wide range of bases, with otherworldly landscapes that may reference contemporary chamber music, half remembered folk traditions, or free jazz echoes, this is a mesmerising experience of three artists thinking and playing almost as a single unit.
Trio 2 : Laura Jurd + ‘Leafcutter’ John + Julie Kjaer … first brought together for a one-off gig at London’s Café Oto, this trio of fearless and inventive improvisers engages in a conversation between horns and electronics.
Trio 3 : ‘Barrel’ - Alison Blunt + Ivor Kallin + Hannah Marshall … now ten years old, and with two critically acclaimed albums to their name, Barrel is a string trio like no string trio you’ve ever heard! “Revolutionary, funny and breathtakingly audacious” was the description on the All About Jazz website . . . terms that could well apply to the whole of this evening’s amazing triple bill.
