The fact that Jazz North East doesn't programme much early jazz certainly doesn't mean we don't like it. When it's played with love, commitment, and, above all, imagination, the music of jazz's early decades can still light up a room. Violinist Emma Fisk certainly ticks all those boxes, and it's a pleasure to present her, as part of our 'Women Make Music' series, with two of her main projects.

The name 'Hot Club du Nord' virtually speaks for itself. The music of the 1930s Hot Club de Paris, with Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt, has an enduring popularity, and there's never any shortage of bands still mining the seam. But few do it with the panache of Emma's quartet, unfailingly faithful to the spirit of the original while applying enough creative flair to make it seem as fresh as the day it was minted.

Emma's duo with Jim Birkett digs back even further, to the work of Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang, widely considered to be the first great exponents of jazz violin and guitar. Their work is not heard all that often on today's scene, so it's good to be reminded of just how wonderfully vibrant jazz with a 90 year pedigree can still sound.
