Misha Mullov-Abbado Group  -  Tue Jul 25, 2017  |  08:00 pm
Bassist Misha Mullov-Abbado came to the Jazz Café in February 2015 as part of the Tom Green Septet, and we were so impressed by his playing that we immediately started to talk to him about bringing his own group to Tyneside. It's taken a while, but we've finally nailed it down.

But it's not just Misha's playing that we're looking forward to. He has built a reputation as a fine composer with an exceptionally wide range of influences, rooted in such fellow bass players as Ray Brown, Avishai Cohen and Jasper Høiby and other jazz titans, but also drawing on folk traditions, contemporary classical, and groove-driven pop. It might seem like a recipe for an eclectic mish-mash, but he pulls it all together in a distinctive and organic way convincing enough to have won him both the Kenny Wheeler Jazz Prize and the Dankworth Prize for jazz composition.

Of course great compositions still need to be interpreted, and the membership of his group does the job brilliantly, handling the complex orchestration with aplomb and seizing the opportunities to deliver scorchingly imaginative solos. With such an impressive band, playing such impressive music, we're certain to be . . . well, impressed.
