Pianist Rebecca Nash, previously on Tyneside with Dee Byrne's quintet Entropi, now returns with her own outstanding quartet Atlas.

Rebecca spent well over a year crafting the sound she was aiming for, and recruiting the ideal players to put the vision into practice, and there's no question that she has succeeded triumphantly. The music - progressive yet accessible - brings together elements of acoustic jazz with electronics, textural soundscapes, free improvisation and driving grooves, all at the service of strong melodies. The musical influences too are diverse, with jazz players such as Pat Metheny, John Taylor and Wayne Shorter subtly present alongside hints from contemporary classical, electronica, and even folk music. The blend, however, is so skilfully achieved that the final result has a clear and unique identity.

In trumpeter Nick Malcolm, bassist Chris Mapp and drummer Matt Fisher, Rebecca has surrounded herself with musicians who are absolutely on her wavelength, bringing their own distinctive voices to the mix while complementing each other within the group setting. This is a band with its own voice - one that should most certainly be heard.

Tickets are available from the Jazz Café (0191 222 9882), Reflex CD (0191 260 3246) or online from

This gig is a 'Women Make Music' presentation, financially assisted by the PRS for Music Foundation.
