Playtime is a band, an idea, and an inspiring musical initiative.

Since March 2014 guitarist Graeme Stephen, saxophonist Martin Kershaw, bassist Mario Caribe and drummer Tom Bancroft have been hosting fortnightly 'Playtime' events at the Outhouse in Edinburgh, frequently joined by guests from the cream of the Scottish scene. Yet the core quartet has rarely performed outside Edinburgh, and never south of the border . . . until now, as we bring them to Newcastle.

All four musicians have major reputations as bandleaders, all are among the first-call players in Scotland, and all four compose, each in a style that is highly individual and reflective of his character. From the atmospheric and wittily impressionist works of Kershaw to the supremely descriptive writing of Stephen, and from the sunny Brazilian groove that Caribe brings from Sao Paulo to the intelligent, irreverent, classy and comic imaginings of Bancroft, Playtime's members between them deliver creative music of passion, vigour and vitality.

For this gig at the Jazz Café they'll be playing a selection from the wealth of great material they've built up in their three years together as the Playtime Collective. It's a treat for us to be let into this Scottish secret!

Tickets are available from the Jazz Café (0191 222 9882), Reflex CD (0191 260 3246) or online from
