Jonathan Silk's Fragment Quartet  -  Tue Mar 28, 2017  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 10.00 ( £ 8.00 concessions)
Drummer Jonathan Silk last visited Tyneside with his tremendous big band, demonstrating not only some superb playing, but also revealing what a fine composer he is, with tunes that combined classic big band swing with intriguing contemporary juxtapositions.

The big band has just released its second album, 'Fragment', but it's a mark of the quality of the writing that it works just as well in a small group setting. The quartet which Jonathan brings to the Jazz Café has been touring the material for several months, exploring its potential for extended improvisation; you might say that as the band contracts, the freedom for interpretation expands.

Three of the quartet - sax man Adam Jackson, guitarist Tom Ford, and, of course, the leader himself, were all part of the big band that visited in July 2015, while bassist Chris Mapp has impressed us mightily as a member of the Paul Dunmall Sextet. So we know them all as dynamic improvising musicians, and are pleased to have them back with what promises to be an exciting new repertoire.

Tickets are available from the Jazz Café (0191 222 9882), Reflex CD (0191 260 3246) or online from
