There's no getting round it - Trevor Watts and Veryan Weston are two of the veterans of the UK improvisation scene . . . but, like the best creative musicians, they are constantly looking forward to their next adventure!

As a saxophone and piano duo they played a stunning gig for us at the Lit & Phil in early 2013, but now Veryan has started working with a digital key station that enables him to create fresh soundscapes, taking them to new fields of improvisation. There's still an obvious jazz feel and a strong sense of underlying structure, but with an exploration of melody, harmony and rhythm that is unpredictably fresh and open. This is a dynamic relationship that is still growing.

Opening the evening is bass clarinet specialist Chris Cundy, touring to promote his newly released solo album 'The Disruptive Forest'. In what he describes as "a collection of circular themes, made-up folk songs, and primal improvisations" he explores the rich woody tones of his instrument in a constantly gripping manner.

Of course, when you've got three improvisers of such quality in one room, it's hard to keep them apart . . . so we can expect some new combinations before the night is out!

Tickets for this gig are available from Reflex CDs (0191 260 3246) or online from seetickets.com
