The collaboration between Kit Downes and Tom Challenger, both well established friends of Jazz North East, started life as a project exploring the sonorities of church organs, with the duo's first album slightly ironically entitled 'Church Music'.

Taking the show on the road, however, has necessarily involved some changes - not many jazz venues have a full blown pipe organ on hand - so Kit will be bringing a harmonium with him to interweave with Tom's saxophones. It's a combination that he says "works really well in a small intimate space", and successfully reproduces the nuances of their new album 'Vyamanikal'. This is music that is packed with subtle detail, generally gentle and calm, although not without creative tension as the two players' approaches diverge and converge, building on and around each other's ideas.

Audience members who have heard Kit Downes in such diverse contexts as the power trio Troyka and his stunning acoustic trio 'The Enemy' will know just how much imagination he brings to everything he undertakes. And here's a chance to hear yet another side to his work as he combines with Tom Challenger to produce music for the heart and for the soul.
