Flying Machines  -  Tue Feb 28, 2017  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 10.00 ( £ 8.00 concessions)
Formed in 2014 by guitarist Alex Munk, Flying Machines were quickly making waves (or perhaps air currents would be more appropriate) on the London scene, but the release of their debut album in late 2016 alerted the rest of us to the quality of this outstanding young quartet.

Their music is based around the leader's compositions, which draw equally on the gritty rock-powered approach of Wayne Krantz and the more etherial lyricism of Bill Frisell, resulting in a vibrant mix of the visceral and vertiginous, combining melody and soundscape to startling effect. Munk's own guitar work, with its silkily curling phrasing and rugged rhythm changes, is a constant delight, but it's brilliantly underpinned by the presence of pianist Matt Robinson and drummer Dave Hamblett, both increasingly familiar faces to Jazz North East audiences, plus bassist Rob Mullarkey, a regular member of the house band at London's iconic Ronnie Scott's Club.

It's a mark of how impressed promoters have been by Flying Machine's music that they come to Newcastle towards the end of a 23 date UK tour - no easy achievement in today's competitive jazz world. This is a great band with a great future; it's good to be able to catch them en route.

Tickets are available from the Jazz Café (0191 222 9882), Reflex CD (0191 260 3246) or online from
