Madwort Saxophone Quartet + Noize Choir  -  Sun Feb 12, 2017  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 8.00 ( £ 6.00 concessions)
Just when you think that the saxophone quartet may have exhausted its creative potential, along comes a new one that completely rewrites the book . . . which is exactly what Madwort do.

Led by altoist Tom Ward, who also provides most of the compositions, the musicians engage in a complex discourse that explores the possibilities of convergence and divergence, meditative musical debate and joyous intensity. Although all four are superb soloists in their own right (and have all previously played tremendous Jazz North East gigs in other settings), it's the group's synchronisation, the engaging, rounded brass sound and the impressive ease with which they blend that makes this something very special.

If Madwort is not your average saxophone quartet, then supporting group the Noize Choir are not your average vocal group, with an emphasis on experimental choral sounds, using the extreme edges of the voice, pushing and playing with new ways to make sound. It's a fascinating way to open a gig that will both surprise and delight.

Tickets for this gig are available from Reflex CDs (0191 260 3246) or online from
