The trans-Pennine axis of young improvisers from the Manchester and Leeds scenes (with a few stop off points between) has thrown up some wonderful combinations in recent years, and The Spirit Farm must surely be right up there with the most exciting.

Just look at the line-up. Pianist Adam Fairhall, winner of a Jazz North ‘Northern Line’ award a couple of years ago, is a player with a compendious knowledge of the whole of jazz piano history, and the ability to forge its many strands into imaginative flights of improvisation. Christophe de Bezenac was the saxophonist with the ground-breaking and much missed trioVD. Dave Kane is one of the most sought after bassists not just in the North but right across the UK, while the Hunter brothers, guitarist Anton and drummer Johnny, have been at the heart of a vast range of projects over an impressively diverse stylistic range. And finally Corey Mwamba, the man who is still re-defining the ways in which the vibes can be used in jazz, and a regular and hugely popular visitor to Tyneside.

That’s a hugely impressive sextet, but it also contains the potential for an array of creative permutations, and the band takes advantage of this opportunity in performance (and on their debut CD) by mixing full ensemble passages with shorter duo and trio pieces. The result is a kaleidoscope of tonal colours and rhythmic patterns, different everytime, and constantly fascinating.
