The Fluid Orchestra: Rehearsal 2  -  Sun Oct 09, 2016  |  12:00 am
As part of their 60th anniversary celebrations, Jazz North East have embarked on an extraordinarily ambitious project - the creation, from scratch, of a 12 piece orchestra to play specially commissioned music. And not just your run of the mill orchestra (if such a thing exists); this pulls in adventurous musicians from all over the North, and has what is probably an unprecedented instrumental line-up, with theremin, violin and vibes mixed into the more familiar reeds, brass and rhythm. Compositions, each inspired by a particular decade of JNE's history, are being written by Graham Hardy, Roller Trio's James Mainwaring, Corey Mwamba, and the collaborative pairings of Faye MacCalman & Graeme Wilson, and Zoë Gilby & Andy Champion (the Rodgers & Hammerstein de nos jours).

It's an exciting prospect, and audiences don't have to wait until the 'official' premier performance in December, as each of the monthly rehearsals are being thrown open to listeners - surely a unique opportunity to share in the growth of an entirely new band and its repertoire. This is the second of those rehearsals, working on two of the newly commissioned pieces in a creative dialogue with the composers.

There is no charge for attending these rehearsals, and the musicians will understand if you decide against staying for the full five hours!
