Unfurl Quintet  -  Fri Nov 18, 2016  |  09:00 pm
Admission £ 10.00 ( £ 8.00 concessions)
Unfurl, led by violinist Olivia Moore, was one of the first bands to be selected for the Jazz North 'Northern Line' scheme, a recognition of an utterly distinctive approach that applies jazz improvisation to a range of inspirations including Indian ragas, flamenco, and Arabic music. They played a hugely popular gig at the Jazz Café in 2014, and it's a pleasure to welcome them back as part of Jazz North East's 2016 'Women Make Music' series.

The band started life as far back as 2006, initially as a trio, but has gradually expanded both in membership and in musical horizons, and now comprises a collective of six musicians, from which smaller groups can be assembled. For this gig Oiivia will be joined by longterm members Jim Faulker on guitar, Gavin Barras on bass, and John Ball on tabla and santoor - a kind of Indian dulcimer - along with the group's newest recruit, the tremendous Norwegian vocalist Maria Jardardottir (most recently in Newcastle as a member of the a cappella improvising trio Røyst).

Together they make music that extends across continents, and ranges from the dramatic to the sublime. It's great to have them back in town.

Tickets are available from the Jazz Café (0191 222 9882), Reflex CD (0191 260 3246) or online from
