Hans Peter Hiby Trio  -  Sun Nov 06, 2016  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 8.00 ( £ 6.00 concessions)
No matter how often Jazz North East presents brilliant European improvisers, we often feel that we are just scratching the surface, and the list of artists we would like to see just gets longer and longer. High on that list is German saxophonist Hans Peter Hiby, so it's with immense pleasure that we're finally bringing him to the Bridge.

Hiby's approach is strongly influenced by the ferocious attack of his fellow countryman Peter Brötzmann (indeed, he was at school with Brötzmann's son, the guitarist Caspar), which makes him a natural partner for powerhouse drummer Paul Hession - the two first met in Wuppertal thirty years ago, and have subsequently played as a duo at most of Europe's most adventurous venues. The introduction of bass player Mick Bardon has certainly not softened the coruscating power, but has opened up further possibilities for interaction and dynamic variety. This is improv of cathartic intensity, but also of great internal subtlety.
