A superb trio that first came together when saxophonist Ntshuks Bonga visited Newcastle with the Royal Shakespeare Company and asked Jazz North East if we could organise a gig for him; we brought him to the Bridge to work with Andy Champion and Corey Mwamba, and the creative chemistry exceeded even our most optimistic expectations.

Within a matter of months they played a session at Sage Gateshead, and then went into the studio to record an album. But Ntshuks' busy schedule (he commutes between the UK and his native South Africa) has meant that the trio hasn't reconvened for quite some time, so it's great that we've finally managed to bring them back to the venue where it all began.

Like his major inspirations Dudu Pukwana and Kippie Moeketsi, Ntshuks inclines towards the free end of jazz, but always with a foothold in rhythm and melody - the township influenced music of Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath being another significant point of reference. In Andy and Corey he's working with two kindred spirits, unfettered by strict harmonic or rhythmic shackles, but always sustaining a jaunty momentum. This is a brilliant meeting of musical minds, and it's a truly uplifting way to kick off our Autumn programme.

Tickets for this gig are available from Reflex CDs (0191 260 3246) or online from seetickets.com
