Admission £ 8.00 ( £ 6.00 concessions)
For this gig Jazz North East is teaming up with GemArts as part of their Masala Festival, a week long celebration of South Asian arts and culture.

Based in Leeds, Manjula (the name means 'melodious') is the brainchild of vocalist Vanessa Rani, who followed up her degree in jazz with an extended stay in Kolkata studying Indian classical vocal music. It's this experience that she brings to her work with Manjula, although applied also to a wide range of other stylistic elements, drawing on Portuguese, African and Latin Jazz influences. The result is a kind of world jazz invested with a heartfelt authenticity and integrity.

The success of the project is enormously enhanced by the breadth of experience of the musicians who join her in the quartet, with percussionist Sam Bell, guitarist Joe Harris and bassist Simon Read all key members of the vibrant Leeds scene. With a line-up of this quality, it's little wonder that Manjula was selected for Jazz North's 'Northern Line' roster of leading bands . . . this gig at the Black Swan will show just how good they are.

This gig is a co-promotion with GemArts, with assistance from Jazz North.
Tickets are available from the Jazz Café (0191 222 9882), Reflex CD (0191 260 3246) or online from
