Square One Quartet + MoHaWi  -  Sun Jul 10, 2016  |  08:00 pm
When we first heard Glasgow's Square One Quartet we were immediately struck by the freshness of their approach and the dynamic impact of their music.

Clearly we weren't the only ones to be impressed, because at the end of last year they received the Peter Whittingham Jazz Award, a prize that goes to exciting young bands to enable them to develop and record new material. At this Bridge gig, their first outside their native Scotland, they'll be unveiling some of this music, centred on a four-cornered, democratic musical dialogue between guitarist Joe Williamson, Peter Johnstone on keyboards, David Bowden on bass and Stephen Henderson on drums. Their clear affinity with great melody and the intelligent musical rapport between the four players makes Square One much more than the sum of its parts.

As usual with our 'Splinter' gigs, we team up the touring band with top flight local musicians, but not necessarily in the usual combinations. So for this gig we offered trumpeter Graham Hardy the opportunity to put together a new group of his own choosing, and he's come up with MoHaWi, a cracking trio involving guitarist Mark Williams and in-demand drummer Russ Morgan. Graham has promised to deliver some original tunes written specially for the occasion, alongside new interpretations of more familiar material. So, old friends in new guises, and a great pairing with Square One.
