Bassist Olie Brice has been a regular visitor to Jazz North East in recent years, in contexts as diverse as Loz Speyer's Inner Space Music and an improv duo with German pianist Achim Kaufmann, but this will be the first time he's been here as leader of his own group.

And what a group it is. On mainly original tunes which combine Olie's love for melody with plenty of space for free-ranging improvisation (and the occasional unexpected standard - 'If You Were the Only Girl in the World' often finds a place in their sets), the three horn front line of Alex Bonney on trumpet, George Crowley on tenor sax, and Mike Fletcher on the rarely heard C-Melody sax provide a subtle blend of gently textured harmonies and open but measured intensity. With Olie's own compelling bass playing (Charles Mingus and Charlie Haden are the masters who most readily come to mind), and the impeccable drumming of former Stan Getz sidesman Jeff Williams, this is a band that brilliantly balances the straightahead and the free, and should enthrall fans of both approaches.

Tickets for this gig are available from the Jazz Café (0191 222 9882), Reflex CD (0191 260 3246) or online from seetickets.com
