Thermal Threshold + MacCalman/Collins Duo + Diachronicx  -  Sun May 08, 2016  |  08:00 pm
The second gig in our 2016 'Women Make Music' series brings together three duos who between them explore a wide range of improvisational strategies.

Thermal Threshold is the pairing of Linda Kemp and Beatrix Ward-Fernandez, both using violin and electronics (with vocal contributions from Linda) to unravel the textures of improvised music, revelling in manipulated sound and the punctuation of silence.

Local saxophone player Faye MacCalman has made a huge impression on Tyneside audiences since graduating from Newcastle University last year, and is already grabbing the attention of like-minded musicians further afield. Here she switches to woodwinds, teaming up with drummer Charlie Collins, a key figure in the Sheffield improv scene for around thirty years. The combination of Faye's lyrical explorations and ruminative stylings with Charlie's polyrhythmic percussion delivers improvisations of great contrast and intimacy.

Finally we have Dianchronicx, the Newcastle-based duo of vocalist Gabriele Heller and guitarist Stephen Glendinning. Gabi's distinctive approach, rooted as much in cabaret-theatre as in mainstream jazz singing, is here given free rein through the use of pre-mixed sound collages to add atmosphere to songs of modern urban life.

Tickets for this gig are available from Reflex CD (0191 260 3246) or online from
