Partikel Quartet  -  Tue Apr 26, 2016  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 10.00 ( £ 8.00 concessions)
On their previous two visits to the North East, for Schmazz and then the Darlington Jazz Club, Partikel consisted just of the core trio of saxophonist Duncan Eagles, bassist Max Luthert and drummer Eric Ford. But for this return they add violinist Benet McLean, with a repertoire drawn from their recent third album 'String Theory'.

The involvement of McLean, one of the most exciting fiddlers on the UK jazz scene, provides extra textural richness to the trio's trademark raw emotion and fiercely interactive improvisations. It has also marked a change in the way that the band's arrangements are created; the first two albums followed extended periods of rehearsal and fine tuning, but the new material has been created on the road, beginning with Duncan Eagles' deliberately open compositions and then continuously explored and evolved in live performance.

The outcome is music that has taken Partikel to new levels of acclaim, with the BBC Music Magazine hailing "sinuous, sinewy elegance, spiky funk and languid ballads . . . another intriguing step in the evolution of this talented outfit". This gig at the Jazz Café gives us a welcome chance to catch up.

Tickets for this gig are available from the Jazz Café (0191 222 9882), Reflex CD, Nun Street, Newcastle (0191 260 3246) or online from
