The Deep Whole Trio brings together three of the most acclaimed figures of European free improvisation in reedsman Paul Dunmall, bassist Paul Rogers and drummer Mark Sanders.

They toured the UK in late 2014, but - much to our regret - Jazz North East couldn't fit them into a crowded programme. So when we heard that they would be on the road again to celebrate Paul Rogers' 60th birthday, we lost no time in booking them for the Bridge. Dunmall and Sanders are regular visitors to Tyneside, never failing to amaze by their boundless creativity, but as Rogers lives in France we see him less often - and the convergence of these three giants is for us an unmissable one-off.

But they have worked together in many different combinations over more than two decades, and the communication between them seems almost telepathic and fueled by a wealth of collaborative ideas. In fact they are so familiar with each other's work that the ideas appear to come easily, but playing this adept and authoritative can only come from consistently close listening and instantaneous interaction. This is collective improvisation of the highest order, and we're immensely pleased to have caught them this time round.

Tickets for this gig are available from Reflex Records (0191 260 3246) or online from
