When Andy Champion's quintet ACV burst on the scene in late 2009, it seemed like the most exciting and original North East group in decades. But Andy's not a man to stand still, and this gig unveils the radically re-jigged version of the band, not so much bursting as exploding into the jazz world.

The new line-up is effectively a progressive jazz supergroup. Saxophonist Ollie Dover first came to notice with Shatner's Bassoon, which also employed Joost Hendrickx as one of its two drummers. And Joost in turn is already linked with Andy as two thirds of power trio Shiver . . . the other member of which is genre-busting guitarist Chris Sharkey. Add keyboard revolutionary Matt Bourne, and the new ACV is a who's who of the North's most creative players.

It's a mark of the stature of the 'new' group that their debut performance, at last year's Edinburgh Jazz Festival, was recorded for the BBC's 'Jazz on 3'. But they haven't played in public since then, so this gig at the Black Swan is only their second performance, and their first in a club environment. Andy has promised that there will be a swathe of new material alongside some favourites from the original ACV - although now opened up to even more imaginative interpretation, with a greater emphasis on group improvisation.

ACV Mark 1 was a tremendous band, which rightly drew praise right across the UK jazz scene. But with the sequel we're moving into a new dimension . . . and Jazz North East is immensely proud to be helping with the North East lift off.
