Our 'Splinter' gig for March presents a fascinating contrast between two trios, one from Scotland and the other originally forged here on Tyneside.

Trio HLK think of themselves as rhythmically and harmonically deviant . . . although not in an anti-social way! But they draw on ideas from contemporary classical music and jazz, with elements of hip-hop and other urban styles, to create a soundscape of musical ambiguities in which slippery rhythms and unexpected improvisations provide constant surprise. Guitarist Ant Law has previously wowed Bridge audiences with his own quartet - here, in the company of keyboards man Rich Harrold and drummer Richard Kass, he's an equal partner in a trio at the top of its game.

Sax/guitar/drums trio Taupe, who open the evening, first emerged in October 2013 as support act for Luxembourg's Michel Reis Trio; at the time the members were all students at Newcastle University, and although they have now moved on, they still get together for regular gigs, including an appearance at the Manchester Jazz Festival. Self-described as a "power jazz commando team", much of their music is characterised by high energy attack, but there is a huge amount of subtle interplay within the maelstrom, with tightly structured compositions and brilliantly interweaving improvisations. It's great to see them back in town.
