Pete Oxley & Nicolas Meier  -  Tue Feb 23, 2016  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 10.00 ( £ 8.00 concessions)
To describe Pete Oxley and Nicolas Meier as a guitar duo is accurate as far as it goes, but it hardly tells the full story, because their joint mastery of a whole range of guitars and related instruments (such as the Turkish baglama and the 11-string glissentar) means that they have a vast array of changing sounds, moods and textures at their disposal.

But this certainly doesn’t mean that their collaboration is a display of virtuosity for its own sake. Much of their work is characterised by a relaxed, contemplative approach that focuses on flowing melody and harmonic interplay rather than heavily accented rhythms and up-to-eleven riffing. Indeed, reviews of their recent album ‘Chasing Tales’ emphasise the calm serenity of much of the music, and the beauty and purity of their sound.

The variety is also enhanced by the different backgrounds of the two musicians. Pete Oxley has the more conventional jazz pedigree, having played with the likes of Bobby Wellins, Mark Lockheart and John Etheridge, while Swiss-born Nic Meier has had more of a globe-trotting career (including touring regularly with Jeff Beck), picking up influences wherever he goes. So, different, but entirely compatible, and resulting in a spontaneity and an intuitive interplay between them that keeps them fresh and fired up from gig to gig. The duo therefore comes to any performance with an anticipation that they share with the audience: to expect the unexpected!
