This gig launches a new initiative from Jazz North East, inspired by the Sunday 'Splinter' nights previously run by our friends Zoë Gilby and Andy Champion. The difference is that these monthly sessions will generally feature a double bill of a local band and a national (maybe even international) touring band.

For this opener the local component comes from Triptych, sometimes referred to as pianist Paul Edis' "other trio", but in fact - as the band name suggests - a partnership in which all three members carry equal weight, with bassist Paul Susans and drummer Rob Walker contributing to the repertoire.

London-based trio Glasshopper also have a local connection, with guitarist James Kitchman having been brought up in Hexham before heading to the metropolis to further his jazz education. It was there that he teamed up with rising star saxophonist Jonathan Chung, who contributes all the trio's sophisticated compositions, and in-demand drummer Corrie Dick (on Tyneside earlier this year with trumpeter Laura Jurd). There's a strong melodic foundation to the trio's music, given unexpected twists and turns by improvisations that draw on rock and folk influences in addition to the jazz tradition, and always highlighting the creative imaginations of all three band members.

Tickets for this gig are available from Reflex Records (0191 260 3246) or online from seetickets.com
