For a country whose native population is no greater than that of Newcastle, Luxembourg posseses a remarkable wealth of great jazz talent. Since Jazz North East discovered this rich vein a couple of years ago, we've presented pianist Michel Reis with his trio, saxophonist Roby Glod, and now it's the turn of drummer Jeff Herr with his three piece Corporation.

The first version of this band was formed in 2003 from fellow students at the Maastricht Conservatoire, recorded a couple of CDs, and toured widely. But in 2012 Jeff started to collaborate with two of Luxembourg's leading players in saxophonist Maxime Bender and bassist Laurent Payfert, and quickly realised that this was a line-up that opened up enormous creative potential - and so the Jeff Herr Corporation Mark II was born.

Although the absence of a harmonic instrument such as piano allows the music to move in many different directions, it has its foundations in carefully structured compositions from all three members, with a strength and tightness that is rooted in unfailing rhythmic grooves. The trio's debut album 'Layer Cake' has been hailed in reviews as "A revelation", "vigorous and organic", and "in a direct line from the trios of Sonny Rollins".

This gig is the trio's only UK appearance outside London; the jazz of Luxembourg is still largely unknown this side of the North Sea, and Jazz North East is proud to be letting the Tyneside audience in on the secret.
