OZMA meets Buster  -  Sun Sep 13, 2015  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 8.00 ( £ 6.00 concessions)
We first came across French quartet OZMA a couple of years ago when they toured in a double bill with London's World Service Project. We couldn't fit them into Jazz North East's programme on that occasion, but were so impressed by what we heard that we made a note to book them if another opportunity came round. And now it has.

What's more this will again be a double bill, but of a unique kind. Apart from playing contemporary jazz that has been described as having "enough raw energy to power a small city", OZMA have carved out a niche for themselves in accompanying classic silent films, and the first of their two sets at the Bridge will have them playing alongside a showing of Buster Keaton's 1923 movie 'Three Ages'. The skill with which they match their up to the minute jazz approach to Keaton's deadpan imagery is nothing short of inspired.

Then the second set will be a 'straight' instrumental performance, although there's nothing particularly straight in OZMA's approach - long form compositions featuring rhythmic jump cuts that themselves have an almost cinematic feel, but one that's full of surprises. This is powerful, exciting jazz that launches our Autumn season on the highest creative note.
