It's not often that we book a band that has played a session at Glastonbury (yes, the Festival, not just some local pub), but that's what we're getting with Bristol-based quintet Moonlight Saving Time.

Mind you, they have indisputable jazz credentials as well. They won the Musicians Benevolent Fund's 'Emerging Excellence' award in 2014, and a performance at the Brecon Jazz Festival had to be moved to a bigger venue because of the demand for tickets. A review in London Jazz News explains their diverse appeal: "the band achieved something remarkable, they are bridging the gap between jazz and more accessible music in a very clever way, with musical quality aligned with the potential to be appealing to a wide age range".

At the deeply melodic core of the band's sound is the interplay of Emily Wright's voice and the saxophone of Nick Dover, sometimes in unison, sometimes weaving contrapuntal lines around each other. But the rhythm section play their part as well; there's a real buzz starting to develop around keyboards man Dale Hambridge (here making his Tyneside debut), while bassist Will Harris and drummer Mark Whitlam have already turned heads at the Jazz Café as part of last year's stunning Michelson Morley gig.

So, maybe a slightly more poppy offering than is normal with Schmazz, but with so much great jazz at its heart that, for us, it's a sure fire winner.

Tickets for this gig are available from the Jazz Café (0191 222 9882), Reflex Records (0191 260 3246) or online from
