During his time on Tyneside, drummer David Carnegie was a charismatic figure on the local scene, and a catalyst for its development - his band Extreme Measures was the first in a succession of young bands breaking away from the standards repertoire to play original contemporary music. So when he returned to his native Barbados he was sorely missed (although his inspiration lived on).

But now he's back, not on Tyneside but in Edinburgh, and when we heard that he'd formed a new quintet we had no hesitation in asking him if he's like to bring them to Newcastle. Thankfully he said 'Yes', and here they are.

Knowing David's quality, it's no surprise that he's managed to assemble an equally impressive band. Saxophonist Konrad Wiszniewski, pianist Dave Patrick and bassist Jay Kilbride are all in the premier league of the Scottish jazz scene, while a real buzz is starting to develop around vocalist Renée Stefani. And. of course, we are looking forward to hearing the new compositions that David has pulled together for the quintet. When he played a gig recently at the Edinburgh Jazz Bar, the music was described as "compellingly lyrical jazz with a hint of Caribbean sun". We can hardly wait to bask in it.
