Quadraceratops + Entropi  -  Sun May 31, 2015  |  08:00 pm
One of the most exciting developments on the London scene in recent years has been the emergence of LUME, a weekly night of original improvised music established by saxophonists Cath Roberts and Dee Byrne. Apart from playing host to a constantly evolving array of new young bands, the Hoxton club is also the home base for the organisers own outfits - Cath with Quadraceratops, and Dee with the quintet Entropi - and it's these two bands that come to the Bridge as part of a 'LUME on Tour' initiative that will bring their music to a wider audience.

Quadraceratops is a 7-piece band that has been in existence since 2011, and has been widely praised for the leader's compositions, the arrangements, and the consistently high standard of playing all round. The subtlety of the writing for horns has been compared by several critics to the work of the late Kenny Wheeler, while the energy and individuality has reminded other listeners of Django Bates and Loose Tubes.

Dee Byrne's Entropi is equally exciting and unpredictable (indeed, it takes its name, rather tongue in cheek, from the theory that all matter is becoming increasingly disordered!). Certainly this is music that's full of unexpected twists and turns, but it's all held together by compelling arrangements that leave space for open ended improvisations . . . and the five musicians all take the fullest advantage of the opportunities this provides.

The LUME project is an outstanding illustration of how much creative energy exists on today's UK jazz scene. It's an inspiration to have these examples visiting us here on Tyneside.

Tickets for this gig are available from Reflex Records (0191 260 3246) or online from
