With there being such an abundance of jazz talent around the world, Jazz North East likes to ring the changes, and it's not often that we book the same artist on a regular basis. But we're happy to make an exception for American saxophonist Greg Abate, who comes to the Lit & Phil for his fourth Tyneside appearance in five years.

The reason we keep bringing him back is that he's an absolute master at taking the straightahead bop heritage and making it sound fresh every time, satisfying both those with a nostalgia for the 'golden age' and those who insist that jazz must continue to deliver 'the sound of surprise'. So a typical Abate performance features a mix of well known standards that come up spanking new, and original tunes that feel firmly rooted in the tradition. This is a mainstream master in his pomp.

On his last visit two years ago, also at the Lit & Phil, we teamed him up with our very own Paul Edis Trio (whom he describes as his favourite rhythm section in the UK), and he showed his appreciation by performing a couple of Paul’s own compositions, making the occasion feel much more like a proper working band than merely ‘visiting star plus local backing’. We’re optimistic that the mutual admiration will develop further at this reunion, and we can look forward to another great gig - the sound of the ‘50s delivered with the imaginative energy of 2015.
