Tam de Villiers Quartet  -  Sun Mar 22, 2015  |  08:00 pm
Having lived in Paris since 2003, Scottish guitarist Tam de Villiers has carved out a creative approach that is perhaps more widely appreciated on the French scene than here in Britain. But all that is about to change as his quartet's third album, 'Panacea', is released on the London-based Whirlwind label, and the group embarks on its first UK tour, part of a wider sweep through Europe.

The quartet, drawn from the best of the new generation of French musicians, has itself been together for nearly a decade, and has developed a group interplay that deftly sidesteps fleeting trends, instead drawing on a melting pot of influences that are combined seamlessly into an original voice. What starts as a jazz piece might take an excursion through contrapuntal baroque fantasy, abrasive progressive rock, and rockabilly twangs, before arriving at a hypnotic resolution that provides a subtly different perspective on the starting point. It's eclectic, but not willfully so, with every element contributing to a carefull crafted balance.

Describing Tam de Villiers as "an excellent guitarist", French star Marc Ducret has commended his "fascinating compositions at a very high level". This Bridge Hotel gig gives us a chance to share in the excellence and the fascination.

This gig is promoted by 'Splinter @ the Bridge', and is supported by Jazz North East
