The Jazz Shuttle scheme, established to encourage collaborations between French and English musicians, has thrown up some really interesting combinations over the past few years, including the quartet Sonsale, which Jazz North East itself initiated.

Now we're pleased to be one of the sponsors for Capsule, a fascinating new trio that brings together Leeds-based keyboards maverick Matthew Bourne, French clarinettist Jean-Brice Godet, and guitarist Tam de Villiers, who bestrides both camps, having been born and brought up in the UK before moving to Paris ten years ago.

Each of the three brings a distinct quality to the project; de Villiers contributes his deft compositional flair, Bourne his penchant for freewheeling improvisation, and Godet a focused attention to texture and sound. The aim is to create something that has the intimacy of chamber music, but with an undercurrent of unpredictability that keeps musicians and audience in a constant state of anticipation . . . although anticipation of what, nobody can be quite sure!

This gig is a co-promotion with 'Splinter @ the Bridge', and is financially assisted by the Jazz Shuttle scheme.
