In April 2012 saxophonist Toby Greenwood brought his group We Free Kings to the Cluny at short notice, as a replacement for a band which had pulled out of a Schmazz gig: it proved to be an inspired substitution, and the only surprise is that it's taken three years to bring them back to Tyneside.

In some ways this is a band operating at the heart of the straightahead jazz tradition, with performances built around strongly melodic themes that are stylistically influenced by such titans as Charles Mingus and Wayne Shorter (and role models don't get much better than that). But these are subtly interwoven with rhythmic impulses that derive from Latin American and, even more so, South African jazz, giving an end result in which the influences are apparent but which is nonetheless totally distinctive. The band's members all share the leader's understanding of the jazz tradition and the ways in which it can be made fresh, and deliver the music as a rich blend of style and substance.
