If you were assembling a supergroup from London's LOOP and E17 Collectives, it would look pretty much like Riff Raff.

Leader Dave Manington is the bassist of choice for a host of exciting young bands, Ivo Neame is best known as pianist with internationally acclaimed trio Phronesis, and Tim Giles drums across a wide spectrum from Stan Sulzmann's elegant Neon Quartet to avant-electronica exponents Leverton Fox. If vocalist Brigitte Beraha, saxophonist George Crowley and guitarist Rob Updegraff are less familiar, it can only be because they have not previously appeared on Tyneside - on the London scene they are as close as jazz gets to household names!

All the band's compositions are written by Dave Manington, often with lyrics from Brigitte Beraha (although she also delivers superb wordless improvisations, interweaving lines with sax and guitar). The music avoids the tune-solos-tune format in favour of more group improvisation and pieces which seek to take the audience on a journey. Expect sudden twists and turns that can send the music suddenly spinning off in different directions, themes re-emerging in different ways, often quite radically.

Reviewer Ian Mann has described the result as "Inventive, forward looking jazz that subtly pushes the envelope whilst remaining thoroughly accessible to the listener". We're pleased to offer Tyneside audiences the chance to hear this great group.
