Mercy! Mercy! Mercy!  -  Thu Mar 12, 2015  |  08:00 pm
Admission £ 10.00 ( £ 8.00 concessions)
The late Julian 'Cannonball' Adderley was one of those musicians who managed to appeal to an exceptionally wide audience. His participation on Miles Davis' 'Kind of Blue' album made him a part of jazz history, but he was also one of the first (and finest) purveyors of soul-jazz, retaining popularity when many other jazz musicians were struggling against the pop tides.

This is the artist, and this is the music, celebrated by saxophonist Martin Kershaw and trumpeter Colin Steele in their band 'Mercy! Mercy! Marcy!' (named after the Joe Zawinul tune which was a hit for Cannonball in the '60s). Superb frontmen both, they are backed by a tremendous rhythm section in pianist Steve Hamilton, bassist Brian Shiels and the hugely dynamic drummer Alyn Cosker. A performance at the 2014 Edinburgh Jazz Festival was hailed as "a joyous tribute" in which all the participants "really let rip".

It's been a while since we last heard from some of Scotland's finest musicians such as Kershaw, Steele and Hamilton. Having them return, playing music associated with one of the most popular jazzmen of the past 50 years, is a double - no, a triple - treat. As the French would put it, "Merci, merci, merci".
