Tom Green Septet  -  Tue Feb 24, 2015  |  08:00 pm
In today's straitened jazz economy it's a brave (or foolish) musician who attempts to run a regularly gigging 7-piece band playing entirely original compositions. But back in 2012 that's exactly what trombonist Tom Green decided to do - a decision made all the more risky by the fact that the band was assembled almost entirely from fellow young players barely out of college and with little profile on the jazz scene.

But the talents of Tom and his co-conspirators were soon noticed. In February 2013 he won the Dankworth Composition prize, later in the year he was awarded funding by Jazz Services to record the Septet, and was then named by Jazzwise magazine as "one to watch" for 2014.

All of this has enabled the septet to buck the financial odds and to build a rapidly growing reputation for music that weaves together influences as diverse as Brazilian Choro to New Orleans second line, all with striking melodies, colourful harmony and propulsive grooves. Their debut CD 'Skyline' is released in January 2015, and they come to the Jazz Café as part of a national tour that seems certain to win them fresh legions of fans.
