Stretch Trio  -  Sun Jan 18, 2015  |  08:00 pm

In late 2013 development agency Jazz North launched a new scheme, 'Jazz North Introduces', to support emerging musicians under the age of 25: the Leeds based Stretch Trio are the first winners of this award, and we are proud to be giving them their debut Newcastle gig.

The trio was formed as an outlet for the compositions of saxophonist Andy French, and with the intention of creating a sound that was accessible to a wide audience while still rooted within the jazz idiom. Andy's own use of the EWI (electronic wind instrument) in addition to the tenor sax, and the discreet use of loops and other effects, has contributed to the creation of a distinctive approach, and the band has quickly developed a tight and individual sound that has an appeal beyond the core jazz crowd. And having found their own way of doing things, the trio now applies its approach to a small number of reimagined jazz standards, although original music remains at the heart of their repertoire.

This is a band whose name is absolutely appropriate. They are indeed stretching the ways in which a sax/guitar/drum trio can present its music, but never beyond breaking point. Trombone star Dennis Rollins has described them as "definitely one to watch", and we're pleased to have them launching our 2015 programme.
