WE first came across Stephen Grew more than a decade ago when he appeared alongside fellow piano luminaries Keith Tippett, Howard Riley and Pat Thomas in a wonderful concert at Newcastle University. Since then his profile on the UK scene has not been particularly high (possibly because living in Lancaster reduced his national visibility - and a recent move to Morecambe is unlikely to change the situation!), but he has remained on Jazz North East's radar, and we were pleased to welcome him as one of the contributors to our fund raising event earlier this year.

We're even more pleased to have him return with his own quartet, in which he is teamed with long-time collaborator Phil Marks on drums, and more recent partners in bassist Seth Bennett and rising star clarinet virtuoso Matt Robinson, all members of an informal trans-Pennine pool of improvisers that also includes such JNE favourites as Mick Beck and Charlie Collins. Although their music is all freely improvised, it touches on many influences, from cool, reflective lyricism, through passages of almost conventional melodic and rhythmic jazz, to high velocity workouts reminiscent of Paul Bley and Jimmy Giuffre at their most energetic. A great example of how today's improvising musicians have a profound understanding of the whole jazz tradition and use it to create exciting new music of their own.
