The Anglo-French Jazz-Shuttle scheme, bringing together musicians from both sides of the Channel, has seen the emergence of some superb new bands, crashing through musical as well as geographical boundaries. With The Dors, the scheme continues to break fresh ground.

The English members of the group - Gateshead-born guitarist Chris Sharkey and saxophonist Christophe de Bezenac (technically French himself, but long resident in Leeds) - will be familiar to North East audiences from several settings, although primarily as two thirds of the cutting-edge Trio VD. From the French side comes classically trained pianist Eve Risser and drummer Yuko Oshima (who cut her teeth with the vibrant Japanese rock scene); together they appeared at the 2011 Gateshead International Jazz Festival as 'Donkey Monkey', a duo which "draws an ink moustache on the face of international creative music".

The four musicians started to cross paths at various European festivals around four years ago, and soon discovered that they had enough similar attitudes to make collaboration an attractive prospect (and enough dissimilarities to make it interesting), but it took the creation of the Jazz-Shuttle scheme to make it happen. After four days of intensive composition and rehearsal, the new quartet gave their debut performance at the 2013 Manchester Jazz Festival, revealing music that is both playfully rhythmic and challengingly unexpected - what Eve Risser calls "cerebral music that is also music for the body". And, what is very much the point, it sounds completely different from anything that either Trio VD or Donkey Monkey were previously doing. It's new, it's great, and it should set the Bridge alight!
