Vocalist and composer Juliet Kelly has been an acclaimed presence in UK jazz for more than a decade, yet has somehow never previously appeared on Tyneside, so it's with great pleasure that Jazz North East brings her to the Black Swan for her local debut.

Right from her emergence on the scene Juliet has built her performances around original compositions, winning honours in the International Songwriting Competition in 2004. The project which she brings to Newcastle - 'Spellbound Stories' - continues this practice, with a suite of new songs all inspired by favourite books, from George Eliot's 'Middlemarch' through to Zadie Smith's 'White Teeth'. Reviews have praised her "passionate performance and naturally warm voice", with Jazzwise magazine describing her as "one of the UK's finest female jazz stars".

The quality of her writing and singing means that she has always been able to recruit top flight musicians to her bands, and the group she brings to the Black Swan is no exception. Pianist Nick Ramm is a leading light in London's F-ire Collective, bassist Oli Hayhurst has been on Tyneside previously with many top bands, and young drummer Eddie Hick has been a member of Gilad Atzmon's Orient House Ensemble since 2011. This is a quality band in support of a superb vocalist . . . all making for an unmissable gig.
