Troyka + Pulcinella  -  Tue Jul 15, 2014  |  08:00 pm
Since 2011 tour organisers Match & Fuse have been putting together outstanding double bills of UK and European bands, and we're really excited about presenting this, possible their most adventurous pairing yet.

Troyka, led by Gateshead-born guitarist Chris Montague, with Kit Downes on organ and Josh Blackmore on drums, played a storming Central Bar gig a couple of years ago with what has been described as their "visceral mash-up of rock, jazz and dance music". We straightaway decided to book them again if an opportunity arose, so it's great that they're now coming back - and with the added bonus of an extraordinary French band to share the bill.

Pulcinella hail from Toulouse, but play what they describe as "delocalised jazz" - which basically means that they happily throw together elements of jazz, rock, tango and Balkan music to create something that is both international in scope yet still infused with the spirit and theatricality of French bal-musette - accordion player Florian Demonsant in particular would not have seemed out of place in a 1930s Paris bar. One of Jazz North East's committee members caught the band in Normandy last year, and can hardly contain his excitement at the prospect of seeing them again.

So, two hugely entertaining and musically outstanding bands . . . with, as a climactic finale, all seven musicians coming together at the end of the night to play compositions specially written for this tour. An absolute treat, and an exhilarating way to sign off JNE's Jazz Café programme before the Summer break.
