Nearly twenty years ago Stuart McCallum was a student of fellow guitarist Mike Walker's. The tuition was clearly beneficial, as Stuart has gone on to international acclaim with the Cinematic Orchestra, while Mike continued a stellar career that has included performing with the big bands of Kenny Wheeler, Mike Gibbs and the late George Russell, and most recently touring worldwide as part of the all-star Anglo-American quartet The Impossible Gentlemen.

Yet, despite both living in Manchester, their paths rarely crossed until a chance jam at a mutual friend's party, when their musical and personal rapport was immediately apparent . . . so much so that they decided to start working as a duo. Performing exclusively on acoustic guitars, and embracing their combined wealth of experience, they have succeeded in creating something new and fresh, where their astounding techniques are merely the means to a warmhearted and selfless end. This is guitar music that eschews histrionics in favour of intimate and profoundly subtle interplay, and we are proud to be able to bring the duo to the Jazz Café.

We also have an opening set from Tyneside pianist Paul Taylor, himself a master of evocatively unfurling improvisations that reward close listening. Paul's only previous Jazz North East appearance was with the experimental improv trio The Long Lonesome Go, and we're glad to welcome him back for this solo acoustic set.

This gig is financially assisted by Jazz North through its 'Northern Line' scheme
