Sonny Simmons Quartet  -  Sun May 09, 2010  |  07:30 pm
Admission £ 7.00 ( £ 4.00 concessions)
When Sonny Simmons came to the Bridge in September 2008, many listeners felt that it was the 'gig of the year'. A contemporary of Ornette Coleman and one of the earliest exponents of 'free jazz' back in the 1960s (when he recorded with Prince Lasha - another largely forgotten pioneer - and the late Eric Dolphy), Sonny went into a period of self-imposed exile from the music scene, re-emerging in New York in the mid '90s playing as strongly as ever. He now frequently works with younger musicians on both sides of the Atlantic, but has set up a particularly close relationship with the three Sheffield-based players who joined him for his 2008 gig, and who are with him again for this eagerly awaited return to Tyneside. This gig is a collaboration between Jazz North East and 'Splinter @ the Bridge'.
