WITH there being such an abundance of jazz talent around the world, Jazz North East likes to ring the changes, and it's not often that we book the same artist on a regular basis. But we're happy to make an exception for American saxophonist Greg Abate, who visits Tyneside for the fifth time in six years (although this will be his first gig at the Jazz Café).

The reason we keep bringing him back is that he's an absolute master at taking the straightahead bop heritage and making it sound fresh every time, satisfying both those with a nostalgia for the 'golden age' and those who insist that jazz must continue to deliver 'the sound of surprise'. So a typical Abate performance features a mix of well known standards that come up spanking new, and original compositions that feel firmly rooted in the tradition. This is a mainstream master in his pomp.

As for his previous visits, we've teamed Greg up with our very own Paul Edis, with whom there is clearly a real musical affinity. In fact the relationship has developed to such an extent that the gigs have increasingly included some of Paul's compositions alongside those of Greg. It's a transatlantic meeting of musical minds that continues to flourish.

This gig is a co-promotion with the Jazz Café.

Tickets are available from the Jazz Café (0191 222 9882), Reflex CD (0191 260 3246) or online from seetickets.com
