TEN years ago Paul Dunmall brought a hand-picked band to the Cluny as part of a tour to mark his 50th birthday. Now he's reached bus pass age, and it's great to have him back on another celebratory visit, performing music commissioned by Birmingham promoters Jazzlines.

Between the two Cluny gigs Paul has been a regular visitor to Tyneside in the company of such international icons as Henry Grimes, Andrew Cyrille and Hamid Drake, demonstrating how highly regarded he is on the world stage. But he has also retained a commitment to working on his home patch, and has become a major influence on a new generation of players on the Birmingham scene. The sextet that he has chosen for his 60th birthday tour includes one long-term collaborator in drummer Mark Sanders, but the remaining four members are drawn from that pool of young talent that he has mentored.

So this is a great opportunity to hear some of the rising stars on the UK scene. And, better still. it's a chance to catch up again with Paul Dunmall, one of the towering figures of international improvised music, who after 40 odd years in the business is still going from strength to strength.

This gig is a 'Schmazz @ the Cluny' presentation.
