Arun Ghosh Sextet  -  Fri Nov 01, 2013  |  08:00 pm
WHEN our friends at the arts development agency GemArts asked us if we'd like to come in as co-promoters of the Arun Ghosh Sextet, we didn't need a second invitation. A brilliant clarinet player, Arun has appeared for us in the past (although never as leader) and made a huge impression, so the chance to hear the sextet perform his newly composed 'South Asian Suite' was just too good to miss.

As you'd expect from somebody who describes himself as "conceived in Calcutta, bred in Bolton, and matured in Manchester", the new six movement suite is an affectionate tribute to his ancestral heritage, but filtered through his jazz enthusiasms, and with "a touch of the hills around Blackburn" thrown in for good measure. When it was premiered at the Manchester Jazz Festival, it was rapturously reviewed as "life-affirming music that transcends cultural barriers".

Arun could hardly have assembled a better band to perform this music. The MOBO-winning pianist Zoë Rahman and her brother Idris have themselves found inspiration in their Bangladeshi roots, while table player Nilesh Gulhane adds authentic rhythmic colour to the mix. Bassist Liran Donin and drummer Pat Illingworth have different cultural backgrounds, but have worked steadily with both Arun and Zoë over many years and are perfectly at home with the genre-busting approach.
