WHENEVER bassist Olie Brice comes on the phone, we can be sure that he's got something special to pitch to us. Back in 2010 it was the magnificent trio Catatumbo with Ingrid Laubrock, and last year he came to town with the great Ken Vandermark.

Now he's back, and again with something very special. Oxford-born reedsman Tobias Delius is hardly a household name (how many jazz musicians are, especially when they're still alive?), but he is an immensely admired player on the European scene, particularly associated with the idiosyncratic Amsterdam scene - he lived in the city for many years before moving to Berlin - but also a regular collaborator with such international icons as Louis Moholo-Moholo. What marks him out as a performer is his ability to combine considerable improvisational freedom with a strong core of lyrical structure: like another of his frequent partners, Han Bennink, Delius never loses an underlying sense of swing no matter how far 'out' the music goes.

In coming to the Bridge with Olie Brice and drummer Mark Sanders, he has partners who can keep pace with him every step of the way. Both of them have become Jazz North East regulars, and their presence in any group is a guarantee that this will be a genuine musical conversation rather than just 'Star + Rhythm Support'.

A great way to get our Autumn season under way.
