Saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock has been a favourite of ours for more than a decade, and we've always been glad to have her back (although, since she moved to New York, opportunities have been less frequent). But when we heard that she would be touring in a trio led by drummer Tom Rainey, and with Mary Halvorson on guitar, it wasn't just a question of being "glad" to book them - we were ecstatic!

Rainey, "the ninja of nuance", has been a prominent figure on New York's Downtown scene since the early 1990s, but until the formation of this trio three years ago had never led a band of his own, declaring himself creatively fulfilled as a sideman "playing with friends who trust me". His change of heart is a cause for celebration, because this is a threesome that speaks not just of trust, but of total musical empathy.

From the very first time we heard German-born Ingrid Laubrock it was apparent that here was a player with a distinctive approach, and the move to the US seems to have deepened her individuality. Mary Halvorson, who first came to attention as a protegee of Anthony Braxton, has been called "the most interesting guitarist of her generation", and like Ingrid is a sonic adventurer significantly extending the lexicon of her instrument. She's been on Jazz North East's wish list for several years, but this is the first time we've managed to bring her to Tyneside.

And as to the group's leader, there is probably no more respected a drummer on the New York scene, an immensely sympathetic player, unflashy but capable of playing rhythms within the rhythms, creating textures below the textures. The trio he has put together here is a partnership of equals, but after two decades of making other people's music sound even better, he richly deserves to have his own name at the top of the billing!
