It's more than a decade since Irish-American drummer Sean Noonan first exploded on to the Tyneside scene with punk-jazz trio The Hub, and he's been a welcome visitor on many subsequent occasions. During that time he has travelled through many different musical territories, investigating West African rhythms in 'Brewed by Noon', incorporating story-telling in the duo 'Bourne to Brew', and composing for and performing with a top flight New York string quartet.

He has also continued to tour tirelessly, forging connections throughout America and Europe, and the 'Bavarian Trio' he now brings to the Bridge is evidence of this international dimension. Munich-based guitarist Norbert Bürger and saxophonist Harry Saltzmann share Sean's enthusiasm for conducting jazz raids on all sorts of music (most notably in Norbert's band 'Prettyboys', where Kurt Weill meets Frank Zappa, with John Zorn egging them on), and the new trio draws on a mix of influences that include fractured rock, European folklore and group improvisation to produce music that travels from the avant-garde to vaudevillian comedy, all driven by Sean's hyper-powered energy at the drum kit.

Of course, the instrumental combination of drums, guitar and sax revives memories of the original Hub (where Tim Dahl's bass guitar was a vital ingredient), and Sean promises "a few Hub tunes for our hard-core fans", but these are combined with a wealth of new material created specifically for the Bavarian brew. As evidence of Sean's continuing musical journey, this promises to take us down exciting new autostrada.
